How to Get Moving Permits in Brookline, MA and Reserve Space For Your Moving Truck
Brookline moving permits are a smart way to reserve enough curb space for your moving truck and avoid last-minute parking problems. On busy streets, tight residential blocks, and areas with limited parking, having posted No Parking signs can make loading and unloading faster, safer, and less stressful for everyone involved.
No Parking Signs for Moving and Construction
Brookline requires temporary No Parking signs when you need to reserve curb space for a moving truck, construction vehicle, or similar activity.
Signs may be purchased from the Town of Brookline before the scheduled date. Each sign costs $5. You’ll have to fill out the requested information on the Brookline Moving Permit application, we’ve provided a blank copy below that you can print out and fill beforehand

Tow Zone Sign Posting Rules and Responsibilities
Brookline uses a self-managed sign process. The person purchasing the signs is responsible for posting and removing them correctly.
Temporary No Parking signs must be posted after 6:00 p.m. on the evening before the scheduled move or construction work. The signs must be removed after the permitted time has ended.
Signs may be attached to signposts, parking meter heads, telephone poles, trees, or similar locations. Tape, rope, or twine may be used. Nails and staples are prohibited.
No Parking signs may not:
- Block bike lanes or crosswalks
- Block accessible parking spaces or driveways
- Be placed within 10 feet of a fire hydrant
- Be placed within 20 feet of an intersection
- Cover an existing parking or traffic sign
- Be altered or reused for another date
Brookline Police may refuse to enforce the temporary parking restriction if the signs are posted incorrectly or any of these rules are not followed.
Metered Parking Spaces
The fee to reserve a metered parking space is $24 per meter, per day.
A separate No Parking sign must be attached to each meter head being reserved. Check the parking meter for the hours during which payment and parking restrictions apply.

Permits for PODS and Portable Moving Containers
You must obtain an Occupancy Permit from the Brookline Department of Public Works before placing a POD, moving container, or portable storage box on a public street.
When applying, you will generally need:
- A copy of your contract with the moving container company
- A letter of permission from the moving container company
- The required information for the Brookline online permit application

How to Post the Brookline Moving Permits:
When posting ensure ample space for the truck—about forty feet should suffice. The tow zone signs should be visible from the street and passing vehicles. Both the permit and signs must be posted securely. You can use tape or stretch wrap to secure the signs. Be aware that signs and permits can be removed by weather or neighbors.
Since Brookline doesn’t allow overnight parking, there should be no vehicles in your space in the morning. If there is, call 617-730-2222, the non-emergency line of the Brookline police, to report the illegally parked car and have it towed.
